RIECK, George Theodore

George Rieck led a group to explore and prepare a track from Chum Creek to the Jordan River (Woods Point) gold field via Marysville which became known as the Yarra Track. The route was the shortest to the gold fields from Melbourne, passing through Eltham and Yarra Flats (later Yarra Glen) as opposed to the road via Yea or Seymour or a track from Sale.

Little is known of George Rieck (at one time a miner and mine manager in the Jordan River region). He married Mary McDonald in 1864 and they had a son Charles Ernest who was born in Prahran in 1866.
