Leslie was born in Yarra Glen, the tenth and youngest child of Robert and Elizabeth Ayres (nee Clark). He was working as a labourer at Drouin West when he enlisted in the armed services in January 1916. Leslie Ayres left Australia on 3 June 1916 with the 37th Australian Battalion. Seven months later he was killed in action at the age of nineteen in Armentieres, France on 2 January 1917.
