CHRISTENSEN, Neil (1888-1968)

Born in Healesville in 1888.

Fourth of eight children of Neils Christensen and Sarah Chandler.

Neil was living at Yarra Junction when he enlisted 24 Aug 1914. His mother was Sarah Chandler and through her he is related to Dixons Creek families. His sister Marie married Edward Gordon and thus formed a connection with another of the Dixons Creek families. Neil embarked on the Benalla on 19 October 1914 as a sergeant with the 8th Battalion, G Company, and later transferred to the 14th Battalion. From August until mid-1916 Neil was at Gallipoli or one of the Middle East postings, including a spell in hospital at Heliopolis in September 1915 with influenza. In June 1916 Neil moved to France.  He did various training courses and was an instructor. By July 1918 he was diagnosed with trench fever and gas poisoning and he returned to Australia on 24 August 1918. Neil is commemorated:on the Dixons Creek Roll of Honor
