HUBBARD, Ernest Albert (1894-1917)
Born in Yarra Glen in 1894.
Adopted son of William and Elizabeth Hubbard, known as Snowy.
Five members of the family, including some of Ernests nephews, served in the First World War. Only three returned home, each of them with wounds from the war.
Snowy left Australia 17 April 1915 on the Hororata with the 7th Battalion 5th Reinforcement. He saw active service in Egypt before being sent to Gallipoli where he landed 5 August 1915. He was badly wounded at Lone Pine three days later and evacuated to Alexandria. Snowy endured to see action in France. He was killed at Passchendale 16 October 1917 and is buried at Tyne Cot, Belgium.
