MACALISTER FAMILY
William Garnett Macalister married Lucie Isobel Syme in 1898. Her father David Syme, owner and editor of The Age newspaper (Melbourne), had purchased View Hill, Tarrawarra in 1893 and renamed the property Tarrawarra. The Macalisters initially lived at Elm Cottage while Macalister oversaw extensive developments of the property and built up a major enterprise in the supply of horses to the Indian Army. A new house was built for the family in 1901. It is now part of the Cistercian Tarrawarra Abbey which was established in 1954. William and Lucie had two sons, Rupert and Geoffrey. Rupert died in America in 1930 when the private plane he was piloting crashed.
